Six noodles, one playlist of emotions — the new Chinese kitchen between Seminyak and Canggu that shouldn’t work, and does.

Loulan opened about a month ago, in a stretch of road most people just pass through — the in-between space where you’re either heading out of Seminyak or into Canggu. Not the kind of spot you’d expect a culinary staple to plant itself. And yet.

If I had to give the cuisine a genre, it’s Chinese, and the instrument is noodles. What you taste is like a full playlist — different tempos, different moods, each dish playing its own song and somehow all belonging to the same album.

The Playlist — A Noodle for Every Mood

When I went with friends, we ordered a spread to share and a few personal bowls each. What surprised me was the range: this is a kitchen willing to be delicate and bold in the same seating. Six standouts:

  • Hainanese noodles — delicate, subtle, clean. The soft harmony. Start here.
  • Egg and tomato noodles — playful, warm, comforting. The song you didn’t expect to love but keep humming afterwards.
  • Zha jiang mien — sweeter, stronger, deep, and slurpy. A dish that hits the soul.
  • Beef noodles — in the same simplicity of Hainanese noodles, with a half-key transposed.
  • Dan dan mian — vibrant, nutty, bold. The chorus of the album.
  • Cumin lamb noodles — my favourite. Delivers the punch. If you order one thing, this is it.

What I’m raving about isn’t just any one bowl — it’s the boldness and the willingness to hold this much range on a single menu. Most noodle bars pick a lane. Loulan drives the whole road.

Don’t Skip the Appetizers

The appetizers are hard to miss — the chicken and prawn toast especially. Order it. Trust me.

What Love Does to Food

What’s also interesting is that this shop is run by a pair well known in the Balinese F&B industry — the husband cooks; the wife runs the show. And I think you can taste it. The willingness to hold this many emotions on one menu, to be delicate and bold, subtle and punchy — that kind of range doesn’t happen without trust.

I guess that’s what love does to food. It gives the kitchen permission to hold the full playlist — and a real partnership is what keeps it strong through every track.

The Verdict

Loulan is exactly the kind of place I love writing about. New. Slightly hidden. Genuinely serious about a cuisine that Bali doesn’t do enough of. Bring friends, order broadly, and let the playlist run.

The basics

  • Best for: Group dinners, noodle obsessives, anyone missing serious Chinese food in Bali
  • Don’t miss: Cumin lamb noodles, dan dan mian, the bolo bun
  • Skip if: You want fine dining or big tasting menus — Loulan is a noodle bar with heart, not a special-occasion spot
  • Pro tip: Order broadly and share — the point is the range across dishes, not one perfect bowl
  • Vibe: New, unassuming, quietly ambitious — the room built by a couple who love this food
  • Neighbourhood: Between Seminyak and Canggu (please confirm exact area)
