Estia (ἑστία) — Greek for hearth. Athens street food, woodfired, in the middle of Seminyak.

Estia means hearth in Greek, and that one detail tells you everything about what this place is trying to be. The whole concept is built around it — centuries-old Athens recipes, a roaring woodfire visible the moment you step in, and a room that feels less like Bali nightlife and more like the kind of warm, casual gathering spot you’d find on a side street in Melbourne or Sydney.

I love this place. It’s earned a permanent slot on my Seminyak list.

The Room

Warm, modern, no fuss. The open kitchen runs the length of one wall; the scent of woodfired cooking gets to you before the menu does. Thursday through Saturday they extend into a late-night service with a live DJ, which gives the second half of the evening a real edge — but the lunchtime version is just as good, and quieter.

There’s a strong Greek-Australian café energy to the whole thing. Casual but considered. Honest but never lazy.

The Food

Don’t come here expecting elaborate plating or molecular flourishes. The food is well-thought-out Greek cooking, executed cleanly — woodfired meats, honest sides, the kind of dishes that have been refined over centuries because they actually work.

The way to order is to treat the menu like a painter’s palette. Pick a few things from each section and build yourself a spread — a mosaic of small plates that add up to something far greater than the sum. Here’s how I do it every time:

Start with sourdough flatbread and hummus. Non-negotiable. The flatbread is what sets the tone — pillowy, just-charred, made for tearing. Give it a smell; when you break it.

Add the fried zucchini chips. Crisp, light, completely addictive. Don’t talk yourself out of these.

Pick a couple of salads and sides — small plates designed to share, balance the table, and stretch the meal.

End with a combination of meats and pastas. This is where the woodfire earns its name and the kitchen earns yours.

The result is something like a home meal — brought to the next level. Which is, when you think about it, the entire point. Hearth, elevated. Hence the name.

A Pro Tip

Look at the menu before you arrive. Estia’s menu is the kind where every dish sounds reasonable, but a few are very specifically great. Skim it on the drive over so you can build your spread in your head, visualise the table, and salivate as you do. By the time you sit down, you’ll know exactly what you want, and you’ll order better, faster, and more confidently than the table next to you.

The Verdict

Basically nothing misses at Estia. It’s warm, honest, woodfired, smart — and it sits right in the middle of Seminyak. Go for lunch when you want a slow Mediterranean afternoon. Go Thursday, Friday, or Saturday night when you want the DJ, the woodfire, and the late-night menu running until 2am.

The basics Best for: Group dinners, date nights, late-night Greek with a DJ Don’t miss: The sourdough flatbread with hummus, fried zucchini chips, meats with pastas Skip if: You want fine-dining theatrics — Estia’s whole point is honest food, not flourish Pro tip: Look at the menu before you arrive — the spread you build mentally is half the fun Vibe: Warm, woodfired, Athens-meets-Melbourne Neighbourhood: Seminyak
